What is a Postpartum Doula?

Doula is a word of Greek origin meaning a woman who serves. A postpartum doula is a woman trained and experienced in providing non-medical physical and emotional support, breastfeeding support and household organization to a mother and her family any time during the fourth trimester (three months) following the birth of their baby(ies). She shares her expertise in normal adjustment and the many changes that families experience following the birth of their baby(ies). She assists the parents in learning to integrate the baby(ies) into their lives according to their own philosophies and how to understand and care for the special needs of their baby(ies), but she does not take over the care of the baby(ies). Research has shown that the nurturing support of a postpartum doula greatly assists the mother’s and her partner’s postpartum adjustment, resulting in greater breastfeeding success, enhanced self-confidence in parental roles and a decrease in the incidence of postpartum depression.

Comprehensive Postpartum Doula Services

The Doula Experience postpartum doula services include a planning session in the comfort of your home at the time you decide to pursue services. At this session we will determine your needs and expectations and discuss the desired schedule of services. Flexible scheduling is available for a minimum three hour or maximum eight hour service day and for any length of service within the fourth trimester. Services include non-medical physical, emotional, educational and family support, assistance with self-care recovery measures, information on mother and baby care, assistance in the care and feeding of your baby(ies), breastfeeding support, family adjustment, development of strategies and coping skills, and support with household organization. Above all, your postpartum doula will provide appropriate and non-judgmental support, trusting you to make decisions for your baby(ies) and make wise parenting choices, guiding you to develop confidence in your parenting skills while demonstrating techniques and modeling behaviors. Contact Sunday for a more detailed explanation of postpartum doula services and fees.
